The Verdict: Borrow It, But Read It

While “gripping” might be a stretch, Pathogenesis does offer a fresh perspective on the history we’ve learned from our textbooks. Contrary to the belief that our progress has been determined by our intellect and innovation, and that civilizations, religions, and more have risen and fallen due to conquerors and victories, Kennedy argues that pathogens are more responsible for our current trajectory. The prose is conversational, but often dense, throwing around a lot of historical and biological jargon alike. History buffs may devour this book, but for the common reader, this will be a slower read. With that said, the book shines when Kennedy is highlighting how pathogens changed the tides of pivotal moments in history, offering a new perspective from the usual historical narratives.
